What is a Private Network?

A Private Network is a connection that allows private data to be sent securely via a Virtual LAN connection. Private Networks are a cost effective and efficient way of implementing a business-grade Wide Area Network (WAN). Private Networks empower companies to extend their network service to branch offices and remote users in home offices.

From the user's perspective, a Private Network connection is a connection between the user's computer and the company's server. However, where a Virtual Private Network gives the appearance that data is being sent over a dedicated private link - with a Private Network it really is, utilising a layer 2 Virtual LAN (VLAN). How does a Private Network Work?

Private Networks work differently to VPNs. Whereas VPN technology is based on a tunnelling strategy that creates a private network using TCP/IP to span the Internet, Private Networks are based on a layer 2 Virtual LAN that is totally secure, extremely reliable, and protocol independant.

Rather than placing encrypted packets within encrypted packets within TCP/IP packets to send them across the Internet to a specified and authenticated host where they have to be unpacked, decrypted, and used, all of which takes time and processing power, and introduces latency, the Private Network is simply created on a dedicated secure connection.

With a Private Network only devices actually on that VLAN can see other devices. There is no need to encrypt everything, because there is no way anyone else can see into the network.

Is a Private Network secure?

One of the huge benefits of a VLAN based Private Network is that it is totally secure by its design. Only members of a Private Network can see each other - no one else can see in, and no one in that Private Network can see out either.

In fact it's so secure that you cannot even get to the Internet via a Private Network - you need a separate connection to be able to do that! That is another difference to a VPN, which is quite capable of providing a connection to the corporate printer in the city, as well as allowing the home based telecommuter to browse the Internet and send and receive email.

Benefits of Private Networks

They provide remote, travelling, and telecommuting workers with access to central network resources including file servers, printers, etc.
They securely interconnect satellite offices to enable corporate intranets for such services as video conferencing and Voice over IP (VoIP).
They offer a flat rate monthly service charge, with no additional bandwidth or usage charges. This allows customers to easily budget for their communications and networking costs.

Other benefits include:
• Wide range of access technologies including DSL, ISDN, etc.
• Fixed price service charges with no traffic component
• Extended geographic connectivity for a mobile workforce
• Improved security over VPNs and other remote access methods
• Reduced operational costs versus traditional WAN or VPN
• Reduced transit time and transportation costs for remote users
• Improved productivity
• Greatly simplified network topology and ongoing maintenance
• Faster return on investment than traditional WAN technology
